I am noticing a theme since my arrival here at the CGA. It has consistently been brought up just about every single day in some way, shape, or form.
Commitment.
I’d like to think of myself as a committed person but what I am realizing is that I have all of these ideas, goals, and good intentions. And for about a week I can do really good at accomplishing those goals and following through with them. And I always feel so accomplished and on top of all the things for that week.
And then the next week rolls around and I feel really unmotivated. Defeated. Laziness. Tired. Frustrated because I might not see results. (For example – “I have worked out every day for a week, why have I not lost 20 pounds?” That’s an exaggeration, but you get the idea, right?)
It could be any number of reasons, but whatever the reason may be, I go a day without doing the thing, which turns into a week…. and then 2 weeks….and then a month… and then “oh yeah, what was my goal?”
I don’t want to be a person who talks about doing all of these good things but never actually follows through with them. I want to set goals, and then go after them. I want to be a person who does things. I want to put words into action.
I am going to share with you one of the goals I’ve made, and y’all can help keep me accountable. For a goal to obtain a healthier lifestyle, I committed to exercising 5 days a week for at least 30 minutes. This is something I am doing along with 3 other housemates of mine (house bonding for the win!!), so every morning at 6:30am we go to the gym.
The first few days were a bit rough for me.
The first day I forgot which locker I put my stuff in. I thought I knew the general area I put all my things in, but after opening ALL of the lockers on one side of the room (there are a lot of them!), my housemate found all of my stuff in a locker on the complete opposite side of the room. Perfect.
You better believe I now use the exact same locker every day and I will never forget that locker number. 🙂
That night I confidently pack my bag for the following morning, quite proud of myself for being so on top of it! We get to the gym the next morning and I’m feeling really good about life, even at 6:30am which is a victory in and of itself for me…mornings are hard.
We work out, and all is going well. I go to shower and realize I had left behind some important items that would be needed for the day. So we shower and with our wet hair and not-at-all-put-together selves, rush home to finish the process of getting ready and get the needed items. (No worries – it ended okay. We made it to the office with just enough time to get a cup of coffee before class began, without being late.)
The third day however, the third day was a good day. I didn’t forget a single thing. I didn’t forget which locker was mine. And I got a great workout in.
Success. I’m getting better at this!
There is no significant reason as to why I shared that story with you, other than exposing my airhead tendencies. But I do want to ask you, what are goals that you maybe have talked about, but never actually do?
I want to encourage you to make goals, but don’t stop there. Make commitments to achieve those goals. Find someone to keep you accountable. Share your goal with me and then your commitment to achieving that goal, I would love to help keep you accountable! Just share it with someone. Maybe find a partner to do it with you. Whatever you need to do to accomplish these goals you may have, do it. Let’s be a people of action. Let’s do some things and be a people of our word.
Ready. Set. GO!
We’ve been incredibly blessed by Andi and Neil. Until our house is ready, we’ve been living with them. From the minute we arrived they have made us feel so at home and welcomed us into their family. Thank you for letting us invade your space and letting your home be our home, too.
